In the twilight years of the American arcade, one game would bring touch screens and online gameplay to an unsuspecting public a year before the first iPad and forge a community unlike any other, only to be abandoned by its developer without notice or explanation.

About the Video

Touching Sound is the untold story of Technika - an online rhythm game with a 20 inch touchscreen that appeared in 2009, a year before the first ipad, accrued thousands of fans who became lifelong friends and even married couples, and was shut down by its company without warning or explanation. It predicted the dominance of the touchscreen, and foreshadowed the agony so many communities endure when servers shut down in the ‘games-as-service’ era.

And it all took place in that forgotten bastion of gaming - the arcade - which left the story relegated to obscurity, even though many of the Technika fanbase were console gamers who were introduced to arcades through Technika. Until now.

After a successful Kickstarter, Touching Sound was filmed and edited over a course of 3 years, premiering at San Diego Comic Con in 2017, and going on to win Best Video Game Documentary from the Seattle Tech Doc Fest in 2018. It screened in the Manchester Film Festival and joins the roster as one of the films in the inaugural GDC Film Festival http://www.gdconf.com/news/here-are-the-films-youll-see-at-the-inaugural-gdc-film-festival/.
